National Quitters Day
I have a debate that has been going on inside my head for a few weeks now about whether or not to make some resolutions for 2025.
I decided to give myself a break because I was traveling so much during the first couple of weeks of the new year and to give my New Year's resolutions some serious thought after all that.
Well, the time has come, but I'm now fighting a sinus infection or something like it, which has laid me a bit low, so I'm giving myself more grace.
I'm wondering, at this point, if there are any other excuses I can make to postpone things. I mean, there's still football on TV for a while yet. I could wait until after the Super Bowl, which sounds reasonable.
I am worried that I don't have a good track record with New Year's resolutions, which doesn't make me feel all that good about myself. I also know that I am not alone in any of this, which has me reflecting a bit on the idea of resolutions and why we struggle to keep them.
As we relish the joy of a new year, we are greeted with a fresh canvas brimming with possibilities. The arrival of January ushers in a spirit of hope, optimism, and the compelling urge to improve ourselves.
Yet, as many set forth with resolutions, a common thread weaves through this enthusiastic beginning: the tendency to abandon those resolutions far too quickly. National Quitters Day, occurring on the second Friday of January is a striking reminder that many have already set aside their promises to themselves.
National Quitters Day is when experts have determined that most people who have made resolutions for the new year typically abandon them. Yes, someone studied this. And then gave it the harshest name possible.
Why do we find it so challenging to remain steadfast in our commitments? As life unfolds, the enthusiasm that fuels our resolutions can wane, overshadowed by the routine and challenges we face.
This is true for physical goals, like exercising or eating healthier, and also our spiritual aspirations.
Often, our ambitions of deepening our faith, enhancing our prayer life, or finding more time for reflection can fall victim to the same cycle of abandonment. This can leave us feeling disheartened and disconnected, impacting our overall well-being.
In the face of such challenges, there is encouragement to be drawn from Scripture. Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
This call to remain steadfast can be a beacon of hope as we navigate our goals and resolutions. It encourages us to view setbacks not as failures but as opportunities for growth and reaffirmation of our commitment.
So, how can we combat the allure of quitting? Here are a few strategies to help you maintain your resolutions—goals that nourish your mind, body, and spirit:
1. Set Specific and Realistic Goals: Instead of broad resolutions, focus on measurable, attainable objectives. For example, instead of saying, “I want to read more,” specify, “I will read one chapter daily.” Clarity can ignite motivation.
2. Cultivate a Support System: Share your resolutions with friends or family. A support network can offer encouragement, accountability, and a sense of camaraderie as you strive to meet your goals.
3. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge every step you take towards your resolution. Even minor achievements are milestones worth celebrating. They create momentum and reinforce your commitment.
4. Realign with Your “Why”: Revisit the reasons behind your goals whenever doubts arise. Write them down and reflect on how these resolutions can enrich your life.
5. Practice Self-Compassion: Understand that setbacks are part of the journey. If you slip up, don’t be too hard on yourself. Embrace the opportunity to refocus and recommit.
As you embark upon the journey of this new year, I encourage you to stay the course. Embrace the hope each day holds, and remember that your resolutions are not merely tasks to complete but integral components of your growth and fulfillment.
Stay resolute in your pursuit, nurtured by faith, and guided by purpose. When challenges arise, recommitment and perseverance will lead you to personal victories and a deeper connection with your true self and your spirituality.
May this year be one of profound transformation and abundant hope!
And may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all, now and forever. Amen.
